Letter from Macbeth

[ From 18th March, 2005; 8th Grade English Class ]

My dearest wife,
In fair temper I hope this letter finds you. I, my darling, fear that I am in quite a state.
After leaving the great battle to defeat the treacherous MacDonwald I went upon the heath. Strangest of creatures did I meet thereon, but, forgive me, I wish to boast to my lovely of my achievements in battle.
Following a lengthy staring contest the unworthy traitor ordered his troops forward. My men did well, though none so well as Banquo and myself. I cut a bloody path through MacDonwald’s soldiers until at last I came face to face with him. As he raised his sword to fight me, I stuck mine in his nave. I did make short order of him, lover. But alas, just as we did celebrate the victory we gained over him and his men, a fresh surge of troops came upon us as the waves upon the beach. We disposed of them quickly, yet we feared to celebrate that another army might come upon us.
Subsequently we started on our way home and came on to the heath that lies in our path. On this heath we did see the most frightening of creatures: three old hags. These hags greeted me with the titles Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King. When I questioned them on the use of these titles, for Thane of Glamis I am as surely as the other two I am not, the weird sisters said that Than of Cawdor I soon would be, and King as well. Yet for me to be king would mean the death of our lord Duncan.
After Banquo bid the sisters speak to him, they did away and a royal messenger did bring the news to me that I am Thane of Cawdor henceforth. The first of these witches’ prophecies has come true. I do wonder on the other. I do not wish to see any harm befall Kind Duncan, yet still I knoweth that thou wouldst look sheer radiance as Queen. Confusions continued, the sisters did say unto Banquo that his seed would rule though he would not. Surely, my love, this cannot be correct.
I must away, but as always, you have all my thoughts.

Yours entirely,
Conner Macbeth

[ we had to write a letter from Macbeth to Lady Macbeth pretty much summarizing the first act or something of the play. This was mine =) ]
